Attended a screening clinic?
Did the speech-language pathologist give you intake forms and say that your child could benefit from a complete speech and language assessment?

If no, there is no current need to receive help from our speech-language pathologists. However, keep checking our milestone brochures. You are always able to return to a screening clinic if new concerns develop.

If yes, please fill in and return the intake forms given to you at the clinic as soon as possible. Afterwards you will receive a call inviting you to attend a Parent Information Session. If you have not been called about attending this session three months after sending your intake forms, call the First Words Intake office at (613) 737-7600 ext. 2500.
Parent Information Sessions are hosted by speech-language pathologists. They will share information about ways to help your child learn. This is the first step toward helping your child.
After attending a Parent Information Session, your child will be given an appointment to receive a complete assessment. The assessment will determine the type of services your child needs. This may include speech language therapy.

Private speech-language pathologists
Parents sometimes wish to use a private speech-language pathologist for their child at their own cost. Families who have received the services of a private speech-language pathologist can still receive First Words services.
First Words keeps a list of private speech-language pathologists who see children in the Ottawa area. Please note that First Words does not confirm the practitioner’s certification or qualifications. The Private Practice Checklist includes suggested questions to use when working with a private speech-language pathologist. These lists can be found under “Downloads“.
