First Words Preschool Speech and Language Program of Ottawa

Bilingualism

Children who learn more than one language can experience many benefits. Learning more than one language can help with children’s language, reading and writing skills in school. Children exposed to two languages often know more words and learn about sound patterns and grammatical rules earlier than children exposed to only one language.

If you are concerned about your child’s speech and language abilities in their first language, bring them to a screening clinic. If their first language is not English or French, First Word’s speech-language pathologists will work with cultural interpreters to help check your child’s speech and language.  If you require a cultural interpreter, please call Ottawa Public Health at (613) 580-6744 extension 28020 to make a request.
