First Words Services

FREE community screening clinics! First Words community screening clinics are accessible to all families who are residents of the city of Ottawa.  Clinics are “drop in” and don’t require an appointment.  Parental consent is required.  Families can immediately see a Speech Language Pathologist, get further information on their child’s communication development and receive initial strategies.  More than 75% of children attending a screening clinic are referred for further services.   For our current list of screening clinics, click here.

Direct referrals are possible! If you suspect a speech and language delay, a direct referral to First Words Intake at CHEO can be made by a health professional or a parent – by fax: (613) 738-4893.

Clinical Speech Language Pathology services: Once the completed intake forms are received at the First Words Intake Office at CHEO, families are eligible for services such as parent education, assessment and therapy.  For more information on the First Words service delivery model, click here.

Community outreach and health promotion: Public awareness, prevention and education are at the core of our outreach service.  We offer a variety of services to parents, the community and health professionals.  Visit the “Research and Education” section for more information.
