Preschooler: 3 to 5 years

Much speech and language development takes place in the preschool years.  Among other things, three to five year olds use long sentences with grammar, ask and answer questions, follow complicated directions and tell stories.  Well developed communication skills help children make friends, understand new information and begin to learn to read and write.  These skills are critical to school success.
